Dubai, UAE– Dubai is mourning the passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who died on Monday morning, September 21, 2026.
The Court of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, announced a 10-day period of official mourning across Dubai.
The mourning period begins today, Monday, with flags across the emirate to be flown at half mast throughout the period.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was the younger brother of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and served for many years in Dubai’s security and public life. He was Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security and also had longstanding associations with Dubai’s sporting and maritime sectors.
Born in 1950, Sheikh Ahmed was the fourth and youngest son of the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, the former Ruler of Dubai. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom before joining Dubai’s Central Military Command, where he later became its commander.
He also served as Chairman of Al Wasl Sports Club and played a role in Dubai’s development of maritime sporting activities. He was associated with the establishment of the Dubai International Marine Club and supported the formation of the Victory Team.
Following the announcement of his brother’s passing, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid shared a personal tribute on X, praying for Allah’s mercy for Sheikh Ahmed and remembering him as a brother who would remain in the family’s prayers and hearts.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, also mourned the passing of his uncle and prayed for his mercy and forgiveness.
Dubai will remain in official mourning for the next 10 days, with flags flown at half mast as the emirate remembers Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his long public service.
