As we broke the news on EmiratesReporter.com about about the First Class Order of Zayed II being conferred on Captain Smit Machchhar and the brave flydubai FZ1073 crew, I could not stop myself from putting my thoughts into words, even at the midnight hour. As a responsible journalist, I felt this was a story that deserved more than a news report. It deserved a heartfelt tribute to courage, humanity and the people who stood firm when lives were at stake. I dedicate this special piece to Captain Smit, his wife, Sonal, their son and the entire family, whose strength and resilience have been part of this extraordinary journey.

My heartfelt thanks to Mrs. Sonal Machchhar for taking the time to speak with me when Captain Smit was in hospital recovering from his injuries. In a moment filled with worry, she graciously made time for our conversation, and I will always value that gesture.

So, what happened aboard flight FZ1073?

On September 30, flydubai flight FZ1073 was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv when a serious incident took place inside the cockpit. According to the UAE Attorney General’s investigation update, the co pilot attacked Captain Smit with an emergency axe and attempted to take control of the aircraft.

Despite suffering serious injuries, Captain Smit tried to resist the attack and open the cockpit door. His efforts allowed others to intervene. A pilot travelling aboard the aircraft, cabin crew members and passengers helped rescue the injured captain and restrain the attacker. Other pilots then took control of the aircraft, which was diverted to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia and landed safely.

All those aboard survived. The UAE investigation described the incident as a planned terrorist plot and said further investigative work was continuing.

Speaking to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi from hospital, Captain Smit described how he realised the aircraft was descending dangerously and made a final effort to open the cockpit door.

“I couldn’t let everyone die,” he said, explaining why he continued fighting despite his injuries.

Prime Minister Modi publicly praised the captain, writing: “Captain Smit Machchhar is a HERO.” He said the pilot had shown immense courage and an unwavering resolve to protect others.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also spoke to Captain Smit and praised his actions. “You are a true hero of the brave people of India and Israel,” Netanyahu told him, adding that he was a hero to the entire world.

US President Donald Trump also praised Captain Smit Machchhar, describing him as a hero despite his serious injuries. Recalling information he had received from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said the captain had managed to open the cockpit door and call for help. Trump also praised the passengers who intervened during the emergency.

Earlier, during a visit to Captain Smit on October 3, Sheikh Hamdan praised his courage, responsibility and care for human life. He said the UAE leadership had its “full appreciation and praise” for the captain, describing the UAE as “a nation of compassion, a nation of peace, and a nation of life”.

The latest honour extends that recognition to the flydubai crew members involved in the emergency. Their actions, together with those of Captain Smit, fellow pilots and passengers, helped bring a frightening situation to a safe conclusion.

For the UAE, this is more than a ceremony. It is a reminder that the nation’s strength is reflected not only in its achievements, but also in its values, its leadership and the courage of people who put human life first.
