E.R. INTERNATIONAL- Annual sales data for 2025 confirm that Tesla has been overtaken by China’s BYD as the world’s largest electric vehicle maker. Tesla delivered 1.64 million vehicles during the year, a nine percent decline compared to 2024, after reporting a sharper-than-expected drop in fourth-quarter deliveries. In contrast, BYD announced sales of 2.26 million fully electric cars in 2025, securing the top spot globally. Tesla’s performance came under pressure following the expiry of a $7,500 US tax credit in September, alongside growing political backlash against CEO Elon Musk and intensifying competition from Chinese and European automakers.
The change highlights intensifying competition across the global electric vehicle industry, with China remaining the world’s biggest market for new energy vehicles, including electric and plug-in hybrid models.
