Cambodia- Song Saa Private Island, Taking its name from the Khmer words for ‘sweethearts’, Song Saa Private Island is shaped by a story of love, connection, restoration and purpose. Set within Cambodia’s Koh Rong Archipelago, the resort began not as a conventional hospitality project, but with the discovery of two remote islands, surrounded by reef and a commitment to help revive the fragile environment around them. What followed became a thoughtful expression of intimate, deeply personal regenerative luxury, grounded in care for nature, local communities and Cambodian culture.

The story began in 2006, when founder Melita Koulmandas and her companions set out to explore the islands off Cambodia’s coast aboard an old fishing boat, often sleeping beneath the stars. During the journey, they stopped beside a reef in rapid decline and found shores affected by years of neglect. Yet Melita was immediately drawn to the purity of the two islands and the beauty that remained. That encounter became the starting point for a much greater undertaking, restoring the land and surrounding waters while protecting the character that had made the place so compelling.

Working alongside neighbouring communities, Melita and the Song Saa team helped establish Cambodia’s first marine-protected area and pioneered the Koh Rong Archipelago’s first solid-waste management initiative. These early projects laid the foundations for a model in which hospitality and conservation could support one another.

When the resort opened in 2012, it offered guests the opportunity to experience a more intimate side of Cambodian island life while helping to sustain the environmental and community work that was later brought together under the Song Saa Foundation. That sense of shared responsibility continues across the island today. Every member of the resort team volunteers four hours each month, collectively contributing an annual average of 6,000 hours to initiatives supporting the people and ecosystems of the archipelago.

The same philosophy is expressed through the resort’s 24 villas. Hand built from reclaimed timber and designed by Melita, with her background in architecture and interior design woven into the aesthetic, the spaces incorporate driftwood, naturally cooling thatch and thoughtfully repurposed materials. Rather than imposing upon the landscape, the villas appear to emerge from it, opening towards the jungle, sea and wide tropical skies. Their earthy, quietly inventive aesthetic is a constant reminder that nature is not simply a backdrop at Song Saa, but the heart of the experience.

Wellbeing follows this same connection to place. Scattered across the main island of Koh Ouen and the wilder landscape of Koh Bong, The Saraan Sanctuary draws on ancient spiritual practices, Indigenous healing traditions and contemporary techniques. Guided by the Buddhist principle of ‘Metta’, or loving-kindness towards oneself, others and the environment, its experiences range from Buddhist blessings and meditations to nature-led treatments and personalised wellbeing journeys cantered on sleep, stress, movement, connection and renewal. This philosophy also extends to the resort’s dining experiences, which celebrate contemporary Cambodian cuisine using fresh, responsibly sourced ingredients from local and ethical suppliers.

“Helping heal the islands that I fell in love with almost twenty years ago has been one of the most meaningful parts of my life,” said Melita Koulmandas, Founder of Song Saa Private Island. “From the beginning, I felt a responsibility to care for the islands and the life they sustained and to protect what made them so special. Over time, Song Saa has shown me how much more hospitality can do when it is rooted in that same sense of care. It can help restore nature, strengthen communities and create a deeper connection between people and place. I am incredibly proud of what we have built together, and of this resort that remains so deeply connected to Cambodia, its culture and the natural world around it.”

Nearly two decades after Melita first encountered the islands, Song Saa remains an evolving story of regeneration. It invites guests to slow down and reconnect, while offering a deeply private and exclusive experience shaped by personalised service, nature, family, cultural authenticity and wellbeing. Above all, it demonstrates how considered travel can protect a place, strengthen its communities and leave a meaningful legacy.
