All-women team this Janmashtami is being fielded by Indian Women in Dubai for Dahi Handi ritual. This is not just a celebration. It is a statement.
Dubai, UAE- Dahi Handi has been celebrated across the Indian subcontinent for generations. Young men forming human pyramids, climbing toward a clay pot of yoghurt suspended high above the crowd, urged on by hundreds of voices below. It is spectacle, tradition, and sport all at once.
This year, at the only Dahi Handi celebration in the Middle East, something is happening for the very first time. Indian Women in Dubai is fielding an all-women team.
“This Dahi Handi is more than a matka to me. It is a statement. A statement that when women come together, we rise higher”, said Reema Mahajan, Founder, Indian Women in Dubai
On Saturday, 5 September 2026, at the India Club in Dubai, a group of women will stand on each other’s shoulders in front of a crowd that has never seen this before. They will climb. They may fall. They will get back up. And they will break that matka.
NOT A PROOF OF STRENGTH. A DECLARATION OF CHOICE.
The IWD Dahi Handi team is not attempting to prove that women are the same as men. That has never been the point. The women participating are mothers, daughters, wives, entrepreneurs, caregivers. They are graceful and feminine and soft in all the ways the world expects them to be.
But softness, as Reema Mahajan puts it, is not weakness. And this Janmashtami, in front of the entire Indian community in Dubai, these women are making that point in the most physical, joyful, and undeniable way possible.
The event is as much a celebration as it is a declaration. A community that has spent years cheering for its women is now watching its women form a pyramid and reach for something higher, quite literally.

Dahi Handi is a vibrant festive ritual celebrated across India during Krishna Janmashtami to honour the playful birth of Shri Krishna. The event recreates holy childhood stories of Shri Krishna, who loved dairy and would stealthily steal butter from earthen pots hung high out of his reach. During the festival, communities hang a clay pot filled with curd, milk, and ghee high above the streets. Enthusiastic groups of youth, known as Govindas, form massive human pyramids to reach and break the pot.
