September Reset: How UAE Families Can Give Children a Stronger Start to the New School Year

By Rajni Rani, Chief Editor, EmiratesReporter.com
Dubai, UAE- September should not simply be the month when children return to classrooms, uniforms and homework. It should be a fresh beginning for the whole family. As I researched what UAE parents and students should focus on for the 2026 to 2027 academic year, one message became very clear: preparation is not only about books and school bags. It is also about confidence, wellbeing, good habits, independence and a positive attitude towards learning.
The UAE academic year for students begins on 31 August 2026, according to the Ministry of Education, giving families very little time to move from holiday mode into school routines. My first advice to parents is simple: start adjusting sleep and morning routines before school begins. A calm first week can make a big difference to how children settle into the year.

Parents should also speak to their children about their feelings. A new class, new teacher, new school or even a new academic level can bring excitement as well as worry. Listen without immediately putting pressure on them. Remind your child that they do not have to be perfect from the first day. They simply have to be willing to learn and improve.
Dubai is also placing greater focus on preparing students for life beyond the classroom. KHDA’s Skills for Life initiative, starting in the 2026 to 2027 academic year, focuses on areas including mental resilience, digital skills, healthy lifestyles, financial literacy, relationships and independent living. This is an important message for parents. Good education is not only about examination results. It is also about helping children become confident, responsible and capable young people.
Students should therefore set a few simple goals for themselves. One can be academic, one can be related to a personal skill and another can focus on friendships, confidence or wellbeing. Parents can support these goals without comparing their children with others.
The digital world also deserves attention. Children should be encouraged to use technology and AI responsibly. AI can support learning, but curiosity, original thinking and personal effort must remain at the heart of education.
CONTD………….

Most importantly, parents should remember that encouragement is more powerful than constant pressure. Tell your children that you believe in them. Celebrate effort, kindness, improvement and courage, not only marks.
And to every student preparing for September: do not be afraid of a new beginning. Walk into your classroom with confidence, ask questions, make new friends, learn from mistakes and give yourself the chance to grow.
September is not just the beginning of another school year. It is an opportunity to begin again, think bigger and become a better version of yourself.
The 10 Points to Consider:
1. Reset the sleep clock now
Do not wait until the first school morning. Gradually bring bedtime and wake-up times closer to the school routine.
2. Prepare the mind, not just the school bag
Ask children what they are excited or worried about. The goal should be confidence, not pressure.
3. Give every child three goals
Instead of only saying “get better marks”, encourage one academic goal, one personal goal and one social or life-skill goal.
4. Make AI part of responsible learning
This is a particularly strong 2026 angle. Teach children that AI can help them understand, brainstorm and practice, but it should not replace their own thinking. This fits perfectly with the UAE’s rapidly evolving digital education environment.
5. Create a screen reset
Set clear rules for gaming, social media and late-night phone use before school starts rather than fighting about them after classes begin.
6. Build independence
Let children pack their own bags, organise uniforms, prepare some of their school items and manage simple morning tasks. This connects strongly with KHDA’s new Skills for Life direction.
7. Create a calm homework corner
A simple, organised and distraction-free space can make the transition back to structured learning easier.
8. Talk about friendships and emotions
A new class, new teacher or new school can create anxiety. Parents should make it easy for children to talk without immediately judging or trying to solve everything.
9. Prepare parents too
This is an important twist. Parents should organise transport, uniforms, school communication channels, calendars, payments and extracurricular commitments before the first week becomes chaotic.
10. Don’t make September about perfection
Make the message: “This year, we are going to grow, along with the score.”
