Dubai, UAE- There are moments when a conversation becomes much more than a conversation. It becomes a reflection of courage, gratitude, family values and the strength of the human spirit.
The video call between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Flydubai Captain Smit, who is recovering after the recent flight incident, was one such deeply emotional moment. It was not a discussion about blame or controversy. Instead, it was a conversation centred on life, courage, recovery and the people who stood together during a difficult hour.
From the very beginning of the call, Prime Minister Modi asked Captain Smit about his health and well-being. His words reflected the concern of a nation following the captain’s recovery and the admiration being expressed for the decisions he made during an extremely challenging situation.
Captain Smit, speaking from his place of recovery, remained composed and spoke about his professional experience and the instinctive responsibility he felt towards those travelling with him. His account conveyed something fundamental about aviation: behind every flight is a human being carrying an enormous responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.

“For me, one of the most moving aspects of the conversation was Captain Smit’s humility. Rather than presenting himself as the only person responsible, he repeatedly acknowledged the contribution of others and recognized that everyone involved played their part.“
That humility makes the conversation particularly powerful.
Prime Minister Modi also spoke about the prayers and good wishes being offered across India for Captain Smit and others affected by the incident. The conversation repeatedly returned to family, faith, culture and the emotional support that can give people strength during difficult circumstances.
Captain Smit spoke about reciting the Hanuman Chalisa when experiencing pain and about teaching the prayer to his young son. For him, being away from home did not mean being disconnected from his cultural roots. His words offered a personal glimpse into how faith and family can provide comfort during recovery.
“The Prime Minister also expressed appreciation to the authorities in the UAE and Saudi Arabia for the care extended during the difficult period. That expression of gratitude is important because moments like these remind us that humanity does not stop at borders.“
The conversation also carried a strong message about the value of courage. Captain Smit spoke about his long experience as a pilot and his determination to recover gradually. His approach was realistic yet hopeful: recovery would take time, but he remained confident that he would return to full health.
Perhaps the most memorable part of the conversation came when Prime Minister Modi connected Captain Smit’s actions with the wider values of courage and service. He also referred to Gandhi Jayanti and the idea of non-violence, giving the conversation a broader message about preserving life and standing up for others.
As an editor, I believe this conversation deserves to be remembered not because of the circumstances that brought these individuals together, but because of what it revealed about people.
A pilot facing an extraordinary challenge. A family standing beside him. Medical teams providing care. Authorities extending support. People praying and sending good wishes. And a Prime Minister taking time to personally ask an injured citizen how he is doing.
At its heart, this is a story about humanity.
It is also a reminder that in difficult moments, courage can be quiet, responsibility can be selfless, and recovery can begin with something as simple as knowing that millions of people are standing with you.
Captain Smit’s journey back to full health will take time. But if this conversation is any indication, he is taking that journey surrounded by family, faith, professional respect and the goodwill of people across borders.
