THE LAST DANCE: Messi’s Emotional Farewell to Argentina
Dubai, UAE- There are football matches that are remembered for the scoreline, and then there are nights that become part of a nation’s sporting memory. Lionel Messi’s final appearance for Argentina belonged firmly to the second category.
On Tuesday, 6 October 2026, the 39 year old Messi walked onto the pitch at Buenos Aires’ Monumental Stadium for the final time in Argentina’s famous blue and white shirt. More than 85,000 supporters filled the stadium, not simply to watch a friendly against Benin, but to say goodbye to a player who had been part of Argentine football life for more than two decades.
The occasion had been built around the theme “The Last Tango”, and the emotion was visible even before kick-off. As the Argentina team bus travelled towards the stadium, Messi was seen wiping away tears. Inside the Monumental, a giant Argentina No. 10 shirt carrying the word “Gracias” was displayed on the pitch. His three children accompanied him onto the field, while his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and mother Celia watched from the stands.
And, fittingly, Messi did what he has done throughout his extraordinary international career: he influenced the game.
Argentina defeated Benin 3–0, with Messi involved in all three goals. He supplied the assist for Nicolás Otamendi to open the scoring and later created the second for Nico Paz. In the 71st minute came the moment many inside the stadium had been waiting for. Messi stepped up to take a penalty and scored, giving himself a final international goal in front of his home supporters. It was the 126th goal of his Argentina career.
The final whistle brought another wave of emotion. Teammates, opponents and officials surrounded Messi, while a drone display illuminated the Buenos Aires night sky with tributes to the Argentine icon. The evening ended as much as a national celebration as a football match.
Messi leaves Argentina with extraordinary numbers. He finished as the country’s most-capped player with 208 appearances and its record goalscorer with 126 goals, closing an international career that began in 2005.
But those numbers tell only part of the story.
Born in Rosario, Argentina, Messi emerged as one of football’s greatest talents at a remarkably young age. His international journey began in difficult circumstances when he was sent off just seconds after coming on against Hungary in 2005. Yet that difficult beginning was followed by more than 21 years of extraordinary performances, records, disappointment and, eventually, historic success.
Messi experienced some of the most painful moments of his career wearing Argentina’s shirt. He reached major finals and endured criticism before finally breaking through. Argentina won the Copa América in 2021, followed by the Finalissima in 2022, and then the ultimate prize: the FIFA World Cup in Qatar in 2022. Messi scored seven goals during that tournament and played a central role in Argentina’s triumph over France in the final.
He later added another Copa América title in 2024. His Argentina career also included Olympic gold in 2008 and the FIFA Under 20 World Cup in 2005.
His relationship with Argentina therefore became something much larger than football. For years, the country demanded a major international trophy from its greatest player. Messi eventually delivered it and delivered it repeatedly.
Now the No. 10 shirt will continue without him.
Messi’s international story closes not with silence, but with applause, tears, a goal, two assists and a stadium full of people saying the simplest words possible:
Gracias, Messi.
The farewell may have ended his Argentina playing career, but it cannot end the place he occupies in the country’s football history.
