DUBAI, UAE- Indian Women in Dubai (IWD) , through its all-women team, created history at India Club, Dubai, on September 5, successfully breaking the traditional Dahi Handi matka after three determined attempts during the club’s annual celebration.
The event, organised by India Club and attended by more than 1,000 people, witnessed what was described as the first all-women Dahi Handi human pyramid attempt in the Middle East.
The celebrations opened with celebrity DJ Buddha entertaining the audience, while Swamini Dhol Tasha, an all-women Dhol Tasha band, led a vibrant procession featuring women from Indian Women in Dubai.
The highlight of the evening came when the IWD team took to the Dahi Handi arena to form a human pyramid and attempt to reach the matka suspended overhead.
The team faced a challenging task, falling during its first two attempts. However, the women regrouped after each attempt, supported one another and rebuilt the pyramid before finally succeeding on their third attempt.
“This Dahi Handi was more than a matka. It was a statement. A statement that when women come together, we rise so, so high,” said Reema Mahajan, Founder of Indian Women in Dubai.
The team comprised women from diverse backgrounds, including mothers, daughters, wives, entrepreneurs and caregivers, who came together to participate in the traditional celebration.
“Never, I repeat, never mistake our softness for weakness. When we trust each other, we become stronger. And when we stand on each other’s shoulders, there is no limit to how high we can go,” Mahajan said.
On the third attempt, the women successfully reached and broke the matka, prompting loud cheers and celebrations from the audience. The traditional yoghurt-filled pot broke as the crowd erupted in applause.
The achievement was celebrated across the wider Indian Women in Dubai community, which represents more than 150,000 women.
According to Mahajan, the initiative was not about competing with men but about demonstrating the strength of women supporting one another.
“She did not need to be stronger than everyone. She just needed to know that together, women are unstoppable,” she said.
The successful attempt marked a significant moment for women’s participation in the traditional Dahi Handi celebration in the region, highlighting teamwork, resilience and the growing presence of women in cultural and community activities.
The event concluded with celebrations and appreciation for the women who formed the historic pyramid, as well as the supporters and volunteers who contributed to the effort.

Dahi Handi is a vibrant festive ritual celebrated across India during Krishna Janmashtami to honour the playful birth of Shri Krishna. The event recreates holy childhood stories of Shri Krishna, who loved dairy and would stealthily steal butter from earthen pots hung high out of his reach. During the festival, communities hang a clay pot filled with curd, milk, and ghee high above the streets.
