DUBAI, UAE– There are few symbols that bring an entire nation together as powerfully as its national flag. Across the seven Emirates, the colors of the UAE flag rise proudly into the sky on November 3, carrying a message of unity, loyalty, belonging and national identity. UAE Flag Day is more than an annual celebration. It is a moment for citizens and residents to express their love for a country that has built its identity on the foundations of unity, ambition, tolerance and progress.
Observed every year on November 3, UAE Flag Day brings together people from different nationalities, cultures and generations under one national symbol. From government institutions and private organizations to schools, universities, businesses and homes, the raising of the UAE flag reflects a shared sense of pride and belonging. It is a reminder that the country’s remarkable journey is not defined only by its achievements, but also by the collective spirit of the people who contribute to its growth.
The occasion was announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on December 11, 2012. November 3 was selected to coincide with the anniversary of the accession of the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan as President of the UAE in 2004. The first Flag Day celebration took place in 2013, creating a national tradition that continues to bring the country together every year.
On November 2, 2026, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid called upon citizens, residents, institutions, ministries, schools and universities across the country to raise the national flag on November 3. In his message, he described the occasion as a moment that embodies love, pride and loyalty to the homeland, urging everyone to raise the flag high as a symbol of national honour and glory. His message once again underlined the importance of collective participation in celebrating the values that unite the UAE.

The UAE flag has a history deeply connected to the birth of the Federation. On December 2, 1971, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan raised the national flag for the first time at Union House in Dubai, marking the establishment of the United Arab Emirates. That historic moment represented the beginning of a new chapter in the region, bringing together seven Emirates under one leadership and a common vision for the future.
Designed by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, the national flag features four colours, each carrying a special meaning. The red represents the sacrifices of earlier generations and those who protect the nation. Green reflects growth, prosperity and the country’s development. White symbolises generosity, charitable work and the UAE’s commitment to peace, while black represents strength, determination and resilience. Together, these colours tell the story of a nation that values its heritage while confidently embracing the future.
The significance of Flag Day extends beyond the ceremonial raising of the flag. It offers an opportunity to reflect on the vision of the Founding Fathers, whose determination and leadership transformed the idea of unity into a successful federation. Their legacy continues through the country’s development, its modern infrastructure, its global partnerships, its economic ambitions and its commitment to creating opportunities for future generations.
For the millions of expatriates who call the UAE home, the national flag also represents something deeply meaningful. It stands for the opportunities, safety, stability and sense of belonging that the country has offered to people from across the world. Over the years, residents from different backgrounds have become part of the UAE’s growth story, contributing to its economy, communities, institutions and cultural diversity. Flag Day provides a shared moment for all of them to express gratitude and respect for the country they call home.
The message of this year’s celebrations was also reflected in the statement issued by Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Office of the UAE’s Martyrs’ Families Affairs, on November 3. He described Flag Day as an occasion that embodies national unity, loyalty to the leadership and belonging to the homeland. He also emphasised that respect for the flag goes beyond celebrations and should be reflected in sincere work, excellence, responsibility and active contribution to the nation’s development.
As the UAE looks towards the future, its flag remains a powerful reminder of how far the country has travelled since the establishment of the Union in 1971. It represents the aspirations of a leadership committed to progress and the determination of a people who continue to build, innovate and achieve together.
UAE Flag Day is a national and patriotic occasion, not an official public holiday, so schools and offices remain open.
On this Flag Day, the message is simple yet powerful: one nation, one identity and one flag. Whether raised above a government building, a school, a business establishment or a family home, the UAE flag carries the same spirit of unity and national pride.
May its flag continue to fly high, inspiring generations with the values of unity and loyalty.
Long live the United Arab Emirates.
