Dubai / Pune- As millions of Indians living overseas strive to stay connected with their aging parents back home, a DPS Sharjah alumnus and Symbiosis International University Pune ACCA student has launched ‘Grandfrenz‘, a student-led platform designed to provide trusted companionship and everyday support for senior citizens.
Founded by Joel Mendonca, Grandfrenz aims to address a growing challenge faced by many NRI families — ensuring their elderly parents receive regular social interaction, assistance, and a sense of connection while family members are living abroad or away due to professional commitments.
Having grown up in the UAE and now pursuing his studies in Pune, Joel experienced firsthand the concerns families face when loved ones are separated by distance. This inspired him to create a platform that connects generations by bringing together senior citizens seeking companionship and young students looking for meaningful opportunities.
Grandfrenz connects verified college students with senior citizens for non-medical companionship services including friendly visits, technology assistance, hospital accompaniment, evening walks, reading sessions, grocery support, hobby engagement, and regular wellness check-ins.
“Many families already have healthcare support or domestic assistance arranged for their parents. However, companionship is a different need. Sometimes seniors simply want someone to talk to, help them navigate technology, accompany them for a walk, or check in on them when their children are far away. Grandfrenz was created to bridge that emotional and social gap,” said Joel Mendonca, Founder of Grandfrenz.
Unlike traditional caregiving services, Grandfrenz focuses on the human connection aspect of senior support. The platform is designed to complement existing care arrangements by providing trusted companionship and everyday assistance that helps seniors remain socially active and engaged.
Understanding that trust and safety are the foundation of any senior support platform, Grandfrenz has developed a structured onboarding process for student companions, including KYC verification, identity validation, background checks, reference screening, and safety guidelines.
Joel’s father is supporting the initiative by helping establish a robust verification and onboarding framework to ensure families have confidence and peace of mind when welcoming student companions into their parents’ lives. He is the first point of contact for NRI onboarding and Joel manages the Indian student verification and onboarding.
“Families need more than just a service provider — they need someone they can trust. Our focus is to build a responsible ecosystem where senior citizens feel comfortable and students understand the importance of respect, safety, and accountability,” said Joel.
The startup also creates purpose-driven earning opportunities for students by allowing them to contribute positively to society while balancing their academic commitments.
With changing family structures, increased global migration, and a growing senior population, the need for reliable companionship solutions is becoming increasingly important. Grandfrenz aims to build a trusted intergenerational network across India, beginning with major student and senior communities, and eventually expanding to other cities.
“Our vision is to create a bridge between generations — where young people bring energy and companionship, and seniors share their experiences and wisdom. Grandfrenz is about creating meaningful human connections in an increasingly disconnected world,” added Joel.
