NEPAL, UAE (WAM) – The UAE, for NEPAL, through the UAE Aid Agency, continues to provide various forms of humanitarian assistance to those affected by floods and landslides supporting relief efforts in affected areas.
These efforts are being carried out in implementation of the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to allocate US$10 million to assist those affected, support early recovery and enhance stability amid the difficult circumstances.
Dr. Ahmed Al Mansouri, Director of the Office of the Vice Chairman of the UAE Aid Agency, said the UAE relief team has begun distributing humanitarian assistance, including food parcels, relief supplies and essential items, to people affected by the floods and landslides in the devastated areas, helping to alleviate their suffering.
The UAE search and rescue team inspected areas affected by floods and landslides in Nepal to coordinate relief efforts, assess the damage and identify the needs and assistance required by those affected. Humanitarian efforts are continuing on the ground to ensure the delivery of urgent aid to those in need.
The team has also begun field operations in coordination with the Nepalese authorities to support search and rescue efforts and strengthen coordination among relief teams in the affected areas.

Nepal Tragedy: Devastating Floods and Landslides Leave a Nation Grieving

Nepal is facing one of the most devastating natural disasters in its recent history after catastrophic floods and landslides struck parts of the country following a glacier collapse in the Himalayas on August 26, 2026. The disaster sent an enormous surge of water, ice, rocks and mud through mountain valleys, destroying homes, roads, bridges, vehicles and critical infrastructure.
The tragedy has caused a massive loss of life and left thousands of families searching for missing relatives. According to the United Nations, more than 1,250 people have been killed, while thousands remain missing. Entire communities in northern Nepal have been affected, particularly in areas including Rasuwa, Nuwakot and Dhading. The scale of destruction has made rescue and recovery operations extremely difficult, with damaged roads and infrastructure limiting access to several affected areas.
The disaster began when a large section of glacier and surrounding rock collapsed at high altitude on the Tibetan side of the Nepal-China border. The resulting torrent travelled through the river system with extraordinary force, carrying huge quantities of debris downstream. Infrastructure linked to hydropower, transport and trade was among the casualties, adding another serious challenge to Nepal’s recovery.
Rescue teams have continued searching through debris and damaged infrastructure for survivors. On September 4, two workers were rescued alive from a hydropower tunnel after spending nine days underground, providing a rare moment of hope amid the devastation. However, thousands of families continue to wait for information about loved ones who remain unaccounted for.
The disaster has also highlighted the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to extreme weather and rapidly changing mountain conditions. Experts have warned that rising temperatures, melting glaciers, unstable mountain slopes and other climate-related factors could increase risks across the Himalayan region. At the same time, the precise causes and contributing factors of individual disasters require careful scientific assessment rather than assumptions.
The humanitarian response has expanded as Nepal struggles to provide food, shelter, medical assistance and other necessities to affected communities. On September 4, the United Nations and humanitarian partners launched a US$49.6 million emergency appeal aimed at reaching more than 84,000 people over a four-month response period.
The UAE has also stepped forward with significant humanitarian assistance. Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE allocated US$10 million for those affected and sent relief aircraft carrying food, shelter materials, essential supplies and power generators. A specialist UAE mission, including search-and-rescue personnel, medical evacuation and first-aid experts, has also been deployed to support operations in coordination with Nepalese authorities.
For Nepal, the road ahead will be long. Beyond the immediate rescue effort lies the enormous task of rebuilding homes, infrastructure and livelihoods. The tragedy has once again demonstrated the devastating power of nature and the importance of preparedness, early warning systems, international cooperation and humanitarian solidarity when disaster strikes.
