Editor-Recommended Article: AlUla’s Rangers Scale Nature and Heritage Protection as Global Nature Tourism Is Projected to Reach US$665 Billion

AlUla, Saudi Arabia- With the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) predicting that the global nature-based travel market will reach $665 billion by 2030, AlUla is demonstrating how systematic environmental and heritage protection can set a global benchmark for sustainable destination management.

Coinciding with World Ranger Day, AlUla is one of the few destinations in the world where internationally significant biodiversity and more than 200,000 years of human history exist within the same across AlUla’s interconnected natural and cultural landscape.

Anchored in a light-touch tourism strategy, which includes capping visitor numbers to mitigate overtourism and involving local communities in protecting the destination’s natural and cultural legacy, AlUla has developed an integrated ranger programme that safeguards wildlife, landscapes, archaeological sites and the enduring connection between people and place.

This unique stewardship model combines specialist expertise across biodiversity conservation, reserve management, archaeological site protection and visitor engagement, positioning AlUla at the forefront of sustainable destination management.

With more than 320,000 travellers in 2025 (up 15% from 2021), this light-touch approach demonstrates that active investment in conservation stimulates local economic growth while protecting intangible cultural and natural inheritance.

Protecting Nature and Heritage Through One Ranger Programme

Across AlUla’s dramatic sandstone landscapes, AlUla’s Rangers undertake more than 50,000 kilometres of targeted patrols every month across six protected reserves. Supported by specialist expertise in biodiversity conservation and reserve management, they help safeguard more than half of AlUla’s land while enabling safe, sustainable visitor access.

These rangers, many of them local citizens, combine on-ground monitoring, global-standard conservation training and advanced live tracking technologies, such as EarthRanger and SMART, to deter illegal activities, support habitat restoration, and assist vital research efforts in the field.

Last year alone, the rangers conducted more than 63,000 patrol hours and covered a distance equivalent to 13 times the Earth’s circumference.

The Rangers are also central to ensuring safe, sustainable visitor access that minimises disturbance to the reserves. The successful integration of conservation and tourism experience is reflected in visitor satisfaction levels in Sharaan National Park reaching 94%.

This integrated approach is also being extended to AlUla’s cultural heritage. Through guided wildlife experiences at Hegra, visitors are able to explore the natural environment surrounding Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, offering a richer understanding of the relationship between the landscape, biodiversity and the ancient civilisations that once thrived there. These experiences demonstrate how conservation, storytelling and tourism can work together to create meaningful, low-impact visitor experiences.

With nature-based travel accounting for over half of all global tours, and nature-focused activities capturing around 7% of all global tourism expenditure according to WTTC, AlUla’s ranger programme positions the destination at the forefront of high-value, low-impact travel.

Naif AlMalik, Vice President of Wildlife & Natural Heritage at the Royal Commission for AlUla, said: “Conservation in a landscape as ancient and interconnected as AlUla’s requires operational and scientific discipline, especially as we continue expanding our tourism capabilities. Our Rangers are on the front lines, ensuring our natural legacy is protected and respected by locals and visitors alike. By safeguarding natural habitats today, we can ensure that AlUla’s unique biodiversity thrives for future generations.”

This localised approach to conservation and protection supports the destination’s broader ecological recovery programmes, which aim to rehabilitate 65,000 hectares of degraded land by 2035. Key initiatives include deploying more than 140,000 native plants across projects outside AlUla’s nature reserves alongside active science-led conservation programmes to reintroduce endangered species to the wild – bannered by the Arabian Leopard. To date, there has been numerous species released as part of the rewilding programme, including the Arabian Oryx, ArabianGazelle, Sand Gazelle, Nubian Ibex and Red-necked Ostrich. In addition to this, AlUla is seeing a thriving bird population with the endangered Rüppell’s and Lappet-faced Vultures and the vulnerable Sooty Falcon, all sighted in recent times.

Protecting 200,000 Years of Human History

Beyond protecting AlUla’s natural environment, the Ranger programme also plays a critical role in safeguarding more than 200,000 years of human history. Working across Hegra, Dadan, AlUla Old Town, Jabal Ikmah and the Oasis, specialist ranger teams help protect these globally significant sites while providing authentic, community-led visitor experiences.

AlUla’s approach to safeguarding and interpreting its cultural heritage has also earned recognition from leading international organisations, including UNESCO and the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art.

Nicole Dowd, Head of Public Programs, Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art: “The Rangers of AlUla play an essential role in safeguarding the cultural landscape while helping visitors build a deeper understanding of its history and significance. During our visits, we were inspired by their knowledge, dedication and genuine pride in sharing AlUla’s heritage. Their work demonstrates how heritage conservation and public engagement can go hand in hand, ensuring these remarkable places continue to educate and inspire generations to come.”

Building a legacy destination in line with consumers

AlUla’s destination development and conservation strategy directly addresses shifting global consumer expectations. WTTC finds that over two-thirdsof global travellers seek sustainable travel options, with up to 50% willing to pay a premium for destinations with verified environmental credentials.

However, with 70% of consumers reporting frustration when trying to identify genuinely sustainable destinations, AlUla’s widespread conservation programmes provide proof of authentic, community-led destination stewardship.

AlUla’s broader sustainability framework also includes extensive measures to protect its night skies (certified as among the darkest on the planet) and its historical landscapes. By embedding community employment into environmental and heritage protection, AlUla ensures that destination growth delivers both direct social and economic benefits.
