In an Exclusive interview with EmiratesReporter.com, Aidan shares his insights on why successful leaders never slow down during the summer months, the common mistakes companies make during seasonal slowdowns, and the strategies organisations can adopt to position themselves for a stronger and more successful Q4.
Here is the full interview.
E.R- Many businesses view summer as a slower season. Why do the most successful leaders see it as a strategic window to gain a competitive advantage before Q4?
Aidan O’Brien- Most people, most companies give away too much time. They give away the summer and they say come back to me in September. They give away December and say come back in January. They give away Ramadan and say come back after Ramadan. Many, many people today unfortunately waste time. They think time is infinite when it’s not.
So, people who are high performers, people who are visionary, people who are competitive, they should see an advantage in the summer. There’s always an opportunity. Business goes on, business doesn’t stop in the summer.
So what separates the successful people? Potentially it’s hunger, it’s desire, potentially it’s a belief system, it’s a mental model that they have, either someone has put on them or they have in themselves from experience. But there’s a big opportunity to run fast when other people are sleeping, and that’s what most successful people do. They identify opportunities to gain market share.
E.R- What are the biggest mistakes companies make during the summer months that ultimately weaken their Q4 performance and year-end results?
Aidan O’Brien- Well, they just float, they drift. That’s the biggest mistake. Companies drift, they lack intentionality. A company has to be intentional all year round. You have to have intentionality and purpose and clarity and strategy from the leaders down. It all starts with the leaders.
So many of the people who drift and who float, it’s because of poor leadership, because the leaders are also floating, they’re taking time off, they’re thinking about their families and their trips, and there’s a lack of communication, there’s a lack of vision, there’s a lack of desire, and that’s why a lot of companies are struggling today.
E.R- How can leadership teams use the summer period to identify growth opportunities, strengthen operations, and accelerate execution ahead of the final quarter?
Aidan O’Brien- Every season brings an opportunity, so in summer, if business is objectively slower for whatever reason, it’s an opportunity for the people and the teams and the leadership to grow. It’s a time to strengthen communication. It’s a time to strengthen education within the business. Every season brings opportunities.
The fruit doesn’t grow all year round. The fruit grows in different seasons, the vegetables grow in different seasons, and just like in a business, there’s different aspects of the business that can grow. So great leadership has to identify what can we grow in this season. One thing that should never stop being grown is relationships. All year round relationships should be built.
So, in the summertime, it’s a great opportunity to level up and educate staff on communication, leadership, strategy, and systemisation. This includes educating them on how to delegate, automate, and learn new skills, perhaps using AI as a production or processing tool to improve systemisation, because there is always an opportunity to learn. So summer is a great time for a lot of companies.
E.R- In an uncertain economic environment, what key indicators should leaders be monitoring during summer to make smarter Q4 investment and expansion decisions?
Aidan O’Brien- It depends on the business. Every business is different. But in any time of uncertainty, we have to do a couple of things.
We have to focus on one: we have to stop leakage – leakage of time, leakage of energy, leakage of money in any environment, but especially in uncertain economic environments.
We should also be looking at redefining the roles. How do we become more efficient? Where have we got confusion within the roles? People are not doing what they’re supposed to be doing. Why do we have too many people or we have the wrong people?
So it’s a great time to reflect, and also in economic environments that are uncertain, it’s important to be looking at the opportunity. Opportunity follows difficulty. There’s always an opportunity after a challenging time. So how do we prepare for that? How do we position ourselves for that, and what is the communication needed in the organization and with the marketplace, so that we are ready to capitalize on when the tide rises and when the situation improves.
E.R- How important is talent management during the summer months, and what steps should leaders take now to ensure their teams are fully prepared for making Q4 strongest?
Aidan O’Brien- The education teams need to learn, they need to learn the most important skill in business, which is communication.
So, in the summertime, it’s a great opportunity to level up people, educate people and your staff on communication, leadership, strategy, and systemisation. This includes educating them on how to delegate, automate, and learn new skills, perhaps using AI as a production tool, as a processing, as a systemisation improvement, because there is always an opportunity to learn. So summer is a great time for a lot of companies.
E.R- What are the three most critical actions business leaders should take this summer to ensure a strong and profitable Q4?
Aidan O’Brien- Relationships, relationships, relationships.
Focus on strategic partnerships and all business conversations. So who do I need to be having conversations with? Who do I need to bring value to? Who do I need to be visible to? Who are my ideal customers? Where are they? How can I get in front of the people and be found by the people who are looking for what I have?
Relationships are the most critical focus. It’s only one focus. From that, you could say communication – how to speak, how to move people with language, and then having a good proposition, having a good offer ready. They would be the three things.
E.R- Q4 often determines whether a company exceeds or misses its annual targets. What separates leaders who finish the year strongly from those who spend Q4 trying to recover lost ground?
Aidan O’Brien- It’s all about standards. Companies have to have standards. And why they miss their target is because they spend too much time on the wrong things.
You need to have a team in place to execute on the deliverables, to make sure the product or service is delivered to a high standard. But the big focus has to be on the senior people building relationships, the brand being visible, being findable. Communicating with our exact customer, solving the problem our customer wants solving, and having an offer ready that allows our customers to benefit immediately.
An offer that people want to say yes to, because the value is so high that clients want to buy from you, they want to do business with you. That is what separates companies who succeed and win versus companies who don’t.
Most companies are focused, the people in their positions are doing a bit of everything instead of identifying what they’re best at and where they create leverage and focusing on that.
But if businesses focused on conversations, better quality relationships with their ideal customer, knowing who their customers are, knowing what problem to solve, and having a great offer that makes it easy for their clients to say yes to, more businesses would be thriving, they’d be winning, because the opportunity is very, very big right now.
